PILOTAGE PRE-PLANNING GUIDE
4. Whilst under pilotage
4.1. Start of pilotage
Upon boarding, the Pilot will proceed directly to the bridge to meet the Master.
Once the pilot boat is clear of the ship, and the ship is set on an appropriate initial
heading and speed, the Pilot will initiate the Master/Pilot Information Exchange(
MPX). It is extremely important, that all relevant information is passed on to the
Pilot at this point. Any omitted or undisclosed defects can lead to serious damage
or accidents. The Pilot will conduct an effective watch handover and assist the officer
of the watch in all aspects related to safe passage.
Issues that, if not noted in the MPX, always should be clarified are; if anchors are
ready, engine room manned and if any notice is required to reduce the speed.
For further information regarding safe navigation under pilotage, please refer to ICS
Bridge Procedure Guide.
Pilotage will only commence after Master/Pilot Information Exchange has been
During pilotage, the Pilot will remain on the bridge at all times. In the extraordinary
event that the Pilot has to leave the bridge, same will be agreed with the duty
officer / Master.
The Pilot will at all times comply with the smoking policy in place for your vessel.
